With passengers experiencing poor internet connections on Grand Central’s Class 180 fleet, technology and connectivity solutions provider UR Group was awarded a contract to install a new WiFi system and ethernet backbone. While UR Group was fully capable of fulfilling the telemetry part of the brief, we were called on as its integration partner to design how the system would be incorporated into the trains and to develop a supporting engineering change pack.

Highlights

Client: UR Group

Location: Crofton, West Yorkshire

Services: Engineering

Our delivery:

  • Design work was delivered in line with our process stage gates, as defined in ISO 9001, PRO5
  • The engineering change pack and modification procedure were issued in full, ahead of final acceptance from Grand Central and fleet owner, Angel Trains.

Challenges faced:

  • We faced a tight turnaround on this project, but thanks to proactive collaboration from all partners, the kit was installed and working, on time
  • The biggest challenge was managing the vehicle variations across the C180 fleet. Some of the differences hadn’t previously been documented, but we were able to accommodate them when they were realised at the First in Class fit stage – we went on to successfully achieve the changes needed within the project timescales.

This was our first project with UR Group and teamwork was critical to its successful delivery. The UR Group Project Manager deserves recognition specifically for ensuring all partners remained aligned throughout.

How can we help?
