Location : Derby with limited travel to client premises as required (infrequent)
Due to continued growth, we’re looking to strengthen our established team with a new Programme Manager. They will have responsibility for managing and overseeing the delivery of contracts across our portfolio of clients predominantly in the UK rail sector, but may also engage in other markets as opportunities arise.
The role
As Programme Manager you will be responsible for the delivery of your own projects as well those in the wider projects team, providing expert advice directly to our clients to ensure results are delivered in line with expectations.
You’ll be required to develop and improve our internal project reporting process to accurately track performance. And, reporting to the Head of Department, you’ll be expected to brief the wider Management Team.
Your role will also involve taking the lead on business development activities – creating, developing and driving these forward. You’ll be managing tender submissions, writing/coordinating proposals, as well as developing detailed work breakdown structures which cover scope, resource requirements and associated financials.
Strong organisational and established management skills are required in this role, with prior line management experience also essential.
Main responsibilities
- Manage multiple customer projects, each with unique technical and commercial requirements
- Have experience of developing and maintaining detailed project plans, timelines, and resource schedules
- Track project KPIs and budget performance, while managing risk and change effectively
- Be the key point of contact for both internal stakeholders and suppliers, subcontractors and customers, so strong stakeholder management skills are essential
- Work closely with our clients to understand their needs enabling you to develop a plan for delivering desired outcomes. You’ll need to ensure the scope of work is clearly defined, documented and understood by all parties and that timescales and budgets are carefully monitored and reported
- As the key point of contact, you’ll be responsible for ensuring the project team delivers against agreed milestones, keeping all parties updated
- Fulfil adhoc requests from clients requiring support which reasonably fall within the contractual terms or agreements, submit and manage variations to the satisfaction of all parties
- When faced with challenges you’ll have the ability to think outside the box to find a solution
- Carry out Project Management duties in managing aspects of a project both with a single person, or as a multi discipline team across a larger project
- Ensure overall client satisfaction targets are met throughout the project lifecycle
- Have high attention to detail and accountability for project outcomes, as well as being proactive in the role
- Provide regular reports to senior management, and support business and department strategy planning
- Be confident presenting project updates both internally and to customers
- Have experience of managing a small team and the responsibilities that come alongside including regular 121s, appraisals, performance management, utilisation and pipeline tracking
- Ensure the team’s work meets the Company’s and client’s expectations
- Track PO and invoicing status for all related projects
- Assess and manage risks within complex change scenarios
- Conduct Lessons Learnt studies
- Always conduct yourself in a professional manner
- Travel to customer sites in the UK and internationally as required.
Qualifications and skills
- Engineering Degree qualified is preferred but demonstration of relevant equivalent experience over time will also be considered
- PM qualification from recognised body is desirable, preferably APM or PMI
- Strong skills in Excel and other analytical packages is a must
- Competent with Microsoft Office and Microsoft Project
- Knowledge of Power BI and data analytics is desirable
- Fluent report writing including technical reports
- Confident at presenting ideas and concepts to senior level audiences
- High attention to detail and accountability for project outcomes
- Proven experience delivering multi-phase projects in an engineering or technical environment.
